again?

In June 2002, I set off to run around all 31 Cambridge colleges in alphabetical order after a drunken bet. I even raised 20 quid for the British Hedgehog Preservation Society. A year later, I had nothing better to do than do exactly the same again. Except this time, James Bell's hedgehog Ulysses was coming too.

the rules

Same rules as last year, with the plan to photograph Ulysses at each college. Ulysses is no stranger to photographic fame, featuring in the Where's Ulysses game on the Downing JCR website.

  1. You must start at 10am from the tree in the middle of Kenny Court, Downing College, Cambridge.
  2. To complete the challenge you must return to the tree by 6pm that same day, having satisfied all the conditions of the challenge.
  3. You must visit all 31 Cambridge colleges, in alphabetical order.
  4. At each college a porter should sign to confirm the time of your arrival. If no porter can be found, any member of the college may sign instead.
  5. You should also take a photograph at each of the 31 colleges
  6. The challenge must be completed on foot. The use of motor vehicles, bicycles, punts etc is strictly prohibited.

déjà vu

This is identical to last year. Unsuprisingly. I set off at a brisk jog but my legs give way worryingly quickly. Next year, I'm going to have a decent warm-up.

on a road to nowhere

Girton? Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt.

tradition

I often find that something done twice (even once) becomes a 'tradition'. Hence my traditional stop at the garage on the way back from Girton to stock up on liquid and lunch.

grrrrrrrrrr

Those bloody British Heart Foundation people are doing their fun run again. Note to self: next year, bring supersoaker and cause havoc.

worrying

I seem to be getting further behind schedule. Leg it to Newnham.

confusing

How exactly did it take me 10 minutes to travel between Peterhouse and Queens' last time? I don't mind, it means I'm further ahead than I've been for a while. Say hello to Andy at Queens'.

it's raining it's pouring

I knew this would happen. I will not give in and buy an umbrella.

st edmunds

Different girl, still nice legs. How odd

a thought occurs

Aside from the occasional muscle twinge, I don't feel too bad. There's still quite a bit of time yet. Could I possibly shave 35 minutes off my time and go under seven hours.

dying. dying.

Sprint to Wolfson. Absolute agony. Legs feel like lead. Find shortcut through back off Wolfson. Porter is agonisingly slow. Stagger back to Downing. Clock has not yet struck five... I've made it!

qed

As required by the rules, here are my sheets complete with signatures and times from each of the porters' lodges.

Signatures from Porters Lodges More Signatures

You've seen the evidence now help the hedgehogs. All I ask is 31 measly pence to give a hedgehog a better life!
